The West has rarely glimpsed behind Stalin’s steel mask into his extraordinary private world. Through interviews with family members, the programme reveals details about Stalin’s passions as well as his vicious cruelty. Filmed extensively in Russia, including carefully researched reconstructions, the film offers intriguing insights into his motives and behaviour. The Georgian material I filmed alone, because of the hazards and restrictions on filming in the Caucasus.
